Wild (About) Cherries in Truckee

Owned by Truckee ski Olympian Kristin Krone, Wild Cherries is a hit with locals and visitors.

One visit and you’ll see why.

This is no ordinary coffee house. Or restaurant.

When you walk in, you are treated to a huge selection of breakfast sandwiches, hot panini sandwiches, wraps and baked goodies to go along with countless coffee drinks, teas and smoothies.

While the menu is mixed, it works.

Besides breakfast – and coffee – Wild Cherries offers one of the most varied lunch menus in Truckee. While their most popular lunch items are the hot panini sandwiches like the Turkey Club and Grilled Portabella, their wraps, soups, salads and homemade chili are also winners at this Tahoe restaurant.

The homemade vegetarian chili is served with a cornbread muffin or tortilla chips. Get “The Works” and they’ll add grated cheddar cheese, red onions, cilantro and sour cream. Follow it up with a big slice of chocolate fudge cake – slightly heated – and you’ll be wild about this place.

Maybe the hot sandwiches and hot dishes are so popular because of their ski roots. Local ski Olympian Kristin Krone has owned Wild Cherries since 1999. Krone was formerly the owner of Truckee Coffee Roasters, but decided to branch out nine years ago. Kristin competed in the 1988 Calgary Winter Games in the Women’s Downhill, Super G, and Women’s Combined, and again in the 1992 Albertville Winter Games in the Women’s Combined.

The best part about Wild Cherries is the true local atmosphere. In fact, Kristin has provided 2 bookshelves for locals to display their brochures, for free. It’s like a mini mall, tastefully done with a genuine, authentic feel that emanates from Kristin who has a strong passion for promoting the local culture. In fact, Kristin’s grandmother, Celia, was a very prolific artist in the Truckee-Tahoe area.

Kristin purchases all of her breads and bagels locally, and is in the process of integrating fair trade products. She is also the co-sponsor of the CyclePaths/Wild Cherries bike racing team that meets at Wild Cherries every Thursday morning for their weekly Hammerhead rides.

Wild Cherries is busy which is a good sign. (Read: the food is always fresh!) Service is fast. Prices are more than fair. Local culture. Local owner. Local flavor…hmmm – no wonder it’s a hit.
