The Tahoe Rim Trail is offering a Backpacking 101 course over the weekend of August 20-21, 2016.
Led by volunteer Tahoe Rim Trail guides and experienced backpackers, the class will introduce the basics of backpacking, trip planning, how to pack, bear awareness, campsite selection and set up, meal preparation and Leave No Trace principles.
After a classroom introduction, you will hike a scenic 5 miles from Carson Pass to Showers Lake to enjoy a picturesque evening while learning hands-on backpacking techniques and relaxing next to a scenic alpine lake. More info, click here.
Beginning backpackers are welcome, but should be able to hike at elevation with a 20-30 pound backpack. Participants must provide their own gear, food and clothing. The weekend course will start with a review of gear, and the guides will assist in fitting participants with their packs for best performance.
