Seasons Change

An Irishman and a blond move to Tahoe. Sounds like they should be walking into a bar about this point, but instead, they open up a Fair Trade gift store in Truckee. So there is no punchline, but there are many laughs and foibles and missteps. Their dog, Rebel, is the official greeter with a jumping problem. And, true to many people in the Tahoe area, they live a two-home life. Mick–and it’s not a derogatory name–lives and works in the Bay Area for part of the week, and Heidi operates the shop while living in the log cabin in Pla-Vada.

Meeting locals and sharing stories, we’ve learned that our story is not unique. We are here for the environment, snowboarding, hiking, and lifestyle just like everyone else. We are making the sacrifices that many have done before us. And now that the seasons are changing, everyone is praying for a good snow year, and the irony of moving to Tahoe to open a retail business kicks in. Working every day doesn’t leave much time to enjoy the lifestyle and outdoors.

Rebel is the saving grace (no wonder dogs rule in Tahoe). He gets us outside twice a day to run, hike and play. Rebel loves the snow and can’t wait to take us snowshoeing. He’s got a lot of energy, and is wanting to get to know Cinder and Rex better so that he’s got new buddies to show him around. Otis is his giant double, but won’t really start playing until snow is on the ground.
Seasons change, locations and friends change. But would we change it for the world? No way! The people here are amazing (even if we won’t be considered locals for another 24 years and 6 months) and we can’t wait to get even more involved in the community. We feel the warmth of Truckee’s residents in each encounter, offer for help and smile. And, as we are remembering faces and names, we are greeted by name when we’re out and about. And, you know what? It feels like home. Just like we knew it would.

The autumn leaves are falling, and the skies darkening. We’re wondering if our wood pile will hold up. And we hope to see you all on the slopes. Got the season pass for Sugar Bowl this year and Heidi hopes that being a local will take her to some new runs, and give her courage to learn some new things on the board. At least Alanna has offered to show her some new tricks.

And, if you’re ever wondering where to visit in Truckee, head to Fair & Green and Riverside Studios in the historic district of Brickelltown. You’ll be greeted with a smile and enjoy visiting with the locals–new and old.

Welcome to Truckee Mick! I can’t wait to meet Rebel and his buddies.

I take my mom and dad on their daily walks in South Lake Tahoe to enjoy my favorite dog spots.

    Gotta run,

    Shyra
