See your dreams materialize by setting your intentions in 2010.

This article is a reprint from the January-February edition of Moonshine Ink, the Independent News Source for Truckee and North Lake Tahoe.

Equipped with poster-board, scissors, glue sticks, stacks of magazines, great food, and music, a group of women known as “The Goddesses” spent their second New Year’s Day together at Truckee’s For Goodness Sake, making vision boards for 2010. Spirit brought this sacred circle together in 2008 through a program called “The Artist’s Way: A Spiritual Path to a Higher Creativity.” The program’s creator, Julia Cameron, and other spiritual teachers suggest using the medium of collage as a tool for self-discovery and as a blueprint for creating an authentic life. In the book “Simple Abundance,” Sara Ban Breathnach encourages her readers to create an illustrated discovery journal, noting, “The greatest secret to living a happy and fulfilling life is the realization that everything is created in our minds before it manifests itself in the outer world.”

Whether you call them treasure maps, vision boards, or something else, there is no doubt about the powerful nature of this process. I have been collaging my dreams religiously for years and love being a mighty manifestor. Five years ago I put an image I liked of a woman with butterfly wings and a sun in her womb on a board. I was only slightly surprised when I pulled out the collage last week, saw the image, and realized it is the Cathy McCleland “Empress” print I have hanging above my alter. I have had experiences like this time and again. I’ve manifested trips, concerts, jobs, hobbies, attitude shifts, and more.

Creating vision boards is fun, especially with a group of chatty friends laughing, sharing dreams, and helping each other find images that fit. One person wants new snow tires, another a flat belly, and someone else is looking for romance — not just sex. A day spent like this will go by in the blink of an eye, and the positive energy generated through love and laughter infuses the boards with additional creative power, I’m sure.

The creative process is simple: Ask the Universe for your heart’s desire. Be clear about it. “I want to rent a two-bedroom house with a view of the lake, a garage, and a wood-burning stove.” Believe, and act as if, you have it. See yourself setting the table for dinner, and feel how happy you are. Don’t put any energy into doubt. Don’t worry about how or when; that’s the Creator’s business. Then receive your heart’s desire. Hold on to your dreams and don’t quit before the miracles happen.

Collaging helps us to get clear about what we really want now, providing the opportunity to reassess the things we think we want and to let go of false identities and old beliefs that keep us stuck. Gwendalyn Gilliam, owner of Aloha Spa in Incline Village, described an experience with one of her treasure maps. When she made it, she had visualized herself gardening at a home she was struggling to hold on to after a breakup. She put her energy into the feelings those images inspired and found, upon later examination, that she had manifested those feelings in her life, not in the same garden but in one that fits who she is today. So many of us think what we want is something physical, when it is actually something emotional or spiritual.

Deb Kelly, intuitive and founder of Inner Miles, a resource for energy work and classes in Carneilan Bay, says vision boards are a mental dress rehearsal. She stresses the importance of placing the vision board someplace prominent to reinforce the images and the associated feelings, attracting the chemicals that induce a desire to create change. “It is powerful when you add focus to good feelings,” Kelly says. “It moves the frontal lobe of the brain into action, the place where we can start to turn ourselves around. It’s Divine energy blended with physical vibration.”
