They’ve been tantalizing local taste buds for over 15 years with their gourmet ethnic dishes and sushi.

Meet Doug and Dawn Baehr of Uncommon Kitchen in Tahoe City.

After nurturing locals and visitors at the Stony Ridge Café in Tahoma for eleven years, the Baehrs moved their culinary enterprise inside New Moon Natural Foods in Tahoe City. The move, now 2 years old, is a perfect fit.

Uncommon Kitchen lives up to its promise to provide “Good Fresh Food Fast”; so much so that it was the recent winner of the Sierra Sun’s Best Take Out restaurant in North Shore.

So what’s so uncommon about it?

It’s the art of capturing the ethnic flavors in every bite.

Doug, a classically trained chef from New York, has mastered the recipes and house made sauces to create a distinctive menu that sets the Uncommon Kitchen apart. Salads, sandos, sushi, sauces, and soups and noodle bowls from around the world are what you’ll find.

Like the Ceviche salad – Ahi tuna, shrimp, red bell pepper, red onion, serrano chili, cumin and citrus juices, cilantro and crispy tortilla strips with a sweet red chili-lime dressing. Miso soup, black bean chili and Thai coconut noodle bowl. Nori make sushi rolls. Sandos served on fresh baked baguettes, including the Italian Pan Bagna, and the Muffaletta with dry cured salami, provolone and swiss cheese, bell peppers, organic greens and olive salad and pepperoncinis.

Once you try the dishes, you’ll want to take home the house made specialty sides and sauces (many vegan) like pesto love, salsa fesca, vegan seaweed salad, miso-ginger and lemon tahini dressings and the fresh baked baguettes.

Their philosophy of health living and sustainability permeates every inch of the deli. Doug uses organic produce and dairy, natural meat products and biodegradable/compostable packaging purchased from local supplier, Tahoe Green Packaging.

When he’s not in the Kitchen, Doug can be found exploring Tahoe with his three children and Dawn skiing, riding, rock climbing or hiking.
