Samurai Restaurant & Sushi Bar

Sushi and Japanese delicacies were introduced to South Lake Tahoe by this place in 1984.  Located at the same spot on Hwy 50 for three decades alongside an historic Pony Express marker is Samurai Restaurant. It was the first Sushi Bar in Tahoe which paved the way for many other sushi bars in town.

Samurai now has new owners – Tuya and Gegee – who will keep the same huge portions of sushi, but add new dishes to reflect their style.

Samurai is well known for the size of the sushi, and the freshness, and quality that makes it consistently outstanding prepared by Michael and the other chefs.  Like their menu says, if it’s not fresh they don’t have it.

As the photos on their Facebook page shows, the sushi devours the rice much like a fillet instead of a slice. It’s mouth watering, especially the Hamachi, Shake and Maguro.

But Samurai is not just known for its award-winning sushi. The Fire Cracker salmon appetizer, baked muscles, Hamachi collar, tempura, traditional Japanese dishes, and specialty rolls like the Tahoe Roll and Y3K roll will hook you and make this a regular stop while in South Shore.

Love sake? Tuya and Gegee Mg pride themselves in the wide selection of hot and cold sakes, and offers four specialty sake tastings –  Super Ninja, Shogun Power, Samurai’s Choice and the Emperor’s Grandeur.  While the names may be intimidating (or empowering!), Gegee can help you select the right sampler, and distinguish the subtleties between the various varieties of sake.

To top it off is the ambiance.  Awash in wasabi green from the leather booths to walls, you’ll settle in comfortably at the over sized circular fire place perfect for cold Tahoe nights, Sushi bar, intimate table for 2, or the private Tatami room with your 11 best friends.

Many sushi restaurants have come and gone, but Samurai has mastered the recipe for success.  Samurai is open daily starting at 5pm, and Happy Hour runs Sunday through Thursday from 5pm to 6:30pm featuring $3.50 Hand Rolls, $5.00 Appetizers and $6.00 Specialty Rolls and deals on Hot Sake & Beer.
