Filed Under Birding at Tahoe, South Tahoe Events

The South Lake Tahoe Christmas Bird Count on Saturday, December 17th, will be held from 8am until sundown, is a chance to do some birding in the winter, socialize with other birders and contribute to the largest, longest running citizen science program in the world.

Novices to experts are all welcome for this fun winter event that focuses the 7.5 mile radius count circle on the Upper Truckee River mouth at Cove East.

To join the events from the start, barring a significant winter storm, meet at Alpina Coffee Cafe at 8am located on Emerald Bay Road.  A pizza party, complementary of TINS will conclude the day.

On the count day, participants will meet in the morning for a brief organizational meeting, and then most will head out to the Cove East Restoration area to go birding as a group.  Afterwards, everyone is sent out to their designated areas of the count circle (in our case, a 7.5 mile radius circle centered on the mouth of the Upper Truckee River) to count birds and have fun. At the end of the day, the group reconvenes to tally up the totals and swap the day’s highlights. It’s a fun and social day, and a great excuse to get out and do some birding in the winter.

The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is widely regarded as the largest and oldest citizen science project in the world. Each year, from 14 December through 5 January, tens of thousands of volunteers head out into the winter to count birds for a day. This tradition goes back to 1900, and in the intervening years, these birders have built a database on bird populations that is unmatched by any other wildlife census.

Tahoe Institute of Natural Science (TINS) Co-founder Will Richardson has coordinated the South Lake Tahoe CBC since 2004. For more information please visit Christmas Bird Count.
