As part of National Winter Trails Day, the Tahoe Rim Trail Association will host free guided hikes on January 7th from 10am to 2pm through the newly opened Van Sickle State Park right behind Harrah’s Casino.
There will also be outdoor gear demonstrations, raffle prizes, and a Warming Party at Explore Tahoe after the hikes. While the snowshoes won’t work, you can still lace up your hiking boots for some great treks with Heavenly views, and the water fall with ice sculptures that look like angel wings.
This South Lake Tahoe event is a family-friendly introduction to snowshoeing and to winter opportunities on the Tahoe Rim Trail. Participants will have to bring their own shoes, snacks, water and warm clothing.
Maybe an impromptu Pray for Snow party will take place at some point! And, watch for cyclists who also share this trail.
National Winter Trails Day includes the following:
- It’s FREE for the whole family
- Guided Hikes
- Gear Demos
- Drawings for prizes (If you register online, your name goes into the drawing)
- Winter survival & safety activities
- Winter ecology & Interpretive hikes with local outdoor educators
- A warming party at Explore Tahoe with yummy food
Tahoe Rim Trail Guided Winter Snowshoe Hikes Overview
National Winter Trails Day is also the kick off to the TRT tour guided winter snowshoe hike series. Every Saturday and few other days, experienced Tahoe Rim Trail Guides will be leading FREE hikes for the public at different spots on the Rim Trail. Each week will be a different length and location, so there’s a hike for every ability.
Here are a few of the themed-hikes. Stay posted here!
Full Moon Snowshoe Treks – These gentle treks are for TRTA members, and they will travel a short distance from the upper Tahoe Meadows to a lovely ridge that overlooks the meadow, Slide Mountain and Ophir Creek. The TRTA will provide hot drinks and goodies for participants!
Sweetheart Sunset Hike – Take your sweet someone on a snowshoe date on Valentine’s Day! The TRTA will guide couples to a lovely ridge that overlooks Lake Tahoe at Sunset. We will wine and dine, while enjoying a breathtaking view of the Tahoe Basin. Wine and cheese will be provided by the TRTA.
St. Patrick’s Day Snowshoe Search for the Pot ‘o Gold – Tahoe Mountain Sports is sponsoring this unique family day in the snow. Bring the family out and use avalanche beacons and GPS units to search for some buried treasure. Prizes for everyone!
You must register in advance for these snowshoe treks and stay tuned here for more details, or contact the TRTA office at (775) 298-0012 or by emailing programs@tahoerimtrail.org for a winter list of snowshoe hikes.
