Bring Back the Sugar Pines Presentation at Explore Tahoe March 18

Learn how you can help The Sugar Pine Foundation restore natural regeneration of sugar pines, western white pines and white bark pines in the Lake Tahoe Basin on Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 6pm at Explore Tahoe.

It’s free and refreshments will be served.

In the summer of 2004, John Pickett noticed that most of the sugar pines in the Tahoe Basin were dying. After studying forest pathology at the University of Nevada, Reno he was working as a forest technician for the US Forest Service. He knew that a non-native invasive fungus called blister rust is devastating sugar pines.

The USFS had tried different strategies to eradicate the plague in the past until funding had dried up. John felt passionate about the issue so he formed a little non-profit to identify resistant seed trees and Bring the Sugar Pines Back.
