The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe has Five Core Program Areas:

Character and Leadership Development-

This program is designed to empower youth to support and influence their Club and community, sustain meaningful relationships with others, develop a positive self-image, participate in the democratic process and respect their own and others’ cultural identities. Current programs being offered include Torch Club, training for the Junior Staff through the Workability Program with the South Tahoe High School, and the Community, Higher Education, School Oartnership (CHESP) program.  Torch Club participants learn the democratic process, act as leaders to Club members, run a Club store, raise money for community service projects and special events, and participate in a variety of service projects benefitting the community and especially senior citizens.

Education & Career Development

Programs in Education and Career Development enable youth to become proficient in basic educational disciplines, apply learning to everyday situations and embrace technology to achieve success in a career. During Power Hour, club members are divided into their grade levels in order to get the homework completed during the After School programs. The club communicates with the classroom teachers in order to help facilitate this program for members.

Health & Life Skills

Programs in Health and Life Skills develop young people’s capacity to engage in positive behaviors that nurture their own well-being, set personal goals and live successfully as self-sufficient adults. The Health and Life skills component of the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe emphasize the skills necessary to make healthy choices in life, avoid drug and alcohol use, learn about nutrition and its importance to good health, and learn how to effectively deal with the pressures of life at various age levels.

The program offers a variety of interactive classes daily. The national curriculum, Smart Moves, tackles the issues young people face, like peer pressure to use drugs or alcohol, and the curiosity and pressure to engage in sexual activity. The program emphasizes abstinence, avoidance, and resistance training.

Professional staff members from the Tahoe Youth and Family Services are offering a nationally recognized program called Girl Power once a week. This program’s primary objectives are: to increase public awareness among 9 to 14 year old children and their caregivers about the risks and consequences associated with alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drug use, health issues associated with poor nutrition and the lack of physical activity, to increase knowledge about how to develop positive interpersonal and social skills, and to demonstrate the benefits of developing competencies and increasing interest as well as abilities in education, the arts, sports, and other activities.

The Arts

Programs in The Arts enable youth to develop their creativity and cultural awareness through knowledge and appreciation of the visual arts, crafts, performing arts and creative writing.

Children have an opportunity to participate in Arts and Crafts projects daily. Interest really sores when we offer bead work and ceramic painting. Children also participate in a variety of national promotional programs like the National Fine Arts program sponsored by the Boys and Girls Clubs of America and the Coca-Cola Community Canvas Art Contest, where the local winner participated in the 2002 Olympic Torch community event.

Sports, Fitness & Recreation

Programs in Sports, Fitness and Recreation develop fitness, positive use of leisure time, skills for stress management, appreciation for the environment and social skills.

Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe offers a variety of sports and fitness activities daily. Young people have an opportunity to develop skills in basketball, soccer, golf, tennis, baseball, and flag football. We offer girls only sports as well. Some special programs offered during the Summer programs include field trips to golf outings and beach fun. The club also offers opportunities to take rides on speed boats like the Tahoe Thunder and the Tahoe Research Boat.
