Sierra College Insights Tahoe CultureSierra College Insights presents “Unexpected Encounters in Nepal,” an engaging and free talk by three veteran educators from Tahoe on Friday, Jan. 31.

Doors will open for socializing and refreshments at 6:30 p.m. and the visually rich presentation will take place at 7 p.m.

Attendees will also hear about a 125-mile trek and surprising encounter with Sir Edmund Hillary from painting, drawing and design professor McAdoo, and Derek Larson will share his chance encounter with the Dalai Lama.

“Sierra College Insights is one of the many ways our talented faculty share their expertise and passions,” explains Dr. Kim Bateman, Executive Dean of Sierra College, Tahoe-Truckee. “Unexpected Encounters in Nepal is a not-to-miss evening that offers a glimpse into another culture and land from a scientist, artist and writer.”

Derek Larson, Pam McAdoo and Eve Quesnel will share pictures and anecdotes from their experiences in Nepal. English professor Quesnel returned from a two-week trek in Nepal with her daughter last summer. Along the way, they gained insights from the people they met and were awed by the look of astonishment in children’s faces when a helicopter circled overhead and landed in one of the small villages. Find out who arrived by helicopter and why. Attendees will also hear about a 125-mile trek and surprising encounter with Sir Edmund Hillary from painting, drawing and design professor McAdoo, and Derek Larson will share his chance encounter with the Dalai Lama.

“Expect humor, revealing stories and interesting anecdotes from this dynamic trio,” adds Bateman.

Located in South Asia between China and India, Nepal attracts nearly 600,000 visitors annually. As home to eight of the ten highest mountains in the world, the country is a “bucket-list” destination for mountaineers, rock climbers and adventure-seekers.

In addition to teaching biology at Sierra College, Larson runs Larson Snow and a tour company focused on guided outdoor adventures in Vietnam and Cambodia. McAdoo is an accomplished artist whose work includes watercolor and illustration. She teaches art classes on the Tahoe-Truckee campus both fall and spring semesters. Author Eve Quesnel frequently contributes to Moonshine Ink and teaches English classes at Sierra College.

There is room for 60 participants on Jan. 31. Reserve a place by calling (530) 550-2290 with your name, number in your group and phone number.
