Dogs, their owners, and some rubber ducks will raise money for the Tahoe Truckee Humane Society at the Annual Truckee Duckee Derbee Races and “Dogs in Duds” contest on Sunday afternoon, June 12, from 1 – 4 p.m. at the River Ranch Lodge.

Not sure how the two were combined, but heck – why not?

The Truckee Duckee Derbee rubber duck race on the Truckee River at River Ranch Lodge raises funds for the Humane Society of Truckee Tahoe, and includes music, barbecue, raffle, dog costume contest and more on June 12 from 1 to 4 p.m.

“This year we are also celebrating the return of the river,” said Bill Jensen, event organizer and emcee. “Thanks to El Niño, the Truckee is flowing again and that means two minutes of total unpredictability. The current and eddies always make for an interesting race.”

A new event, called Chuck a Duck, challenges participants to throw a rubber duck into a floating target, has been added this year. The raffle winner will ride away with a Tahoe cruiser bike, and silent auction bidders will have a chance at winning a signed baseball from San Francisco Giants pitcher Sergio Romo, a Burton snowboard and a Squaw Alpine getaway package, among other items.

The pre-race party and registration starts at 1 p.m; Dogz in Dudz and Cool Catz in Hatz at 2 p.m., the Chuck a Duck at 3 p.m. and the Derbee commences immediately after. Cost to sponsor a duck is $10 and the top three ducks win cash. Payout depends on the size of the pot. There is no cost to enter the K-9 costume or hat contest. All Dogz in Dudz participants receive a complimentary doggie goodie bag.

Among the celebrities and local dignitaries expected are Olympian and World Cup Champion Tamara McKinney, Olympian Marco Sullivan, former KCRA-TV and KGO-TV meteorologist and sports reporter Kristine Hanson, KTKE Tahoe Truckee Radio’s Keith “Mr. Truckee” Thomas, Sherry McConkey of the Shane McConkey Foundation and Squaw Valley Times columnist and standup comedian Mike Akay.

Ducks may be purchased online prior to the event and Derbee winners need not be present to collect cash prizes.  To buy a duck or for more information go to or call (530) 581-0181.
