Tim O’Brien, author of the Vietnam era novel, The Things They Carried, will speak at Sierra Nevada College on September 21st at 7 p.m., hosted through a grant from the Nevada State Library and Archives.

Tim O’Brien graduated from Macalester College in 1968 and was drafted into the army. He served as a soldier in Vietnam in 1969-70.

After the war, he attended graduate school at Harvard and worked as a reporter for the Washington Post. He has published numerous stories and books, both fiction and non-fiction, most of them connected in some way with his experience in Vietnam.

The Things They Carried raises difficult questions about the Vietnam War and focuses on the memories and burdens we carry through life. The book is available at the Incline Village Public Library and Sierra Nevada College’s Prim Library.

O’Brien will speak at the college on Friday, September 21 and hold a writing workshop ($50) the following morning. Contact Librarian Betts Markle at 775-881-7501 or library@sierranevada.edu for more information.
