Test your big mountain riding in the legendary Chutes at Mt. Rose on Saturday, March 16, 2013 during the Stake Your Claim amateur free-skiing competition sponsored by Alaskan Brewing Co.
This best ski line contest will take place in the El Cap chute, featuring over 1,000 vertical feet and pitches ranging from 45-55 degrees.
Participants will take two runs and judges will award points based on style, line creativity/difficulty, air and run time.
The day will also celebrate the northern Nevada launch of Alaskan Brewing Company’s Freeride APA the Brewery’s first release brewed through a sustainable beer powered process. Spectators will be entertained by raw athleticism, live raffles, live music from Decoy, and beer sampling. Skiers and snowboarders of all abilities and beer lovers alike are invited to compete in and celebrate an event where the beer flows freely and Alaskan gold is up for grabs.
In order to qualify for this year’s exceptional grand prizes, athletes have to showcase their athleticism, technical skills, and style in an individual free ride run down the Chutes at Mt. Rose**. Winners will be chosen by a panel of talented and experienced judges. Each handpicked judge has a different background in skiing and snowboarding to ensure the best overall performer is chosen. The overall winner will receive a prize of one half ounce of Alaskan gold, while second place will receive one ounce of Alaskan silver, additional ski and snowboard prizes will also be awarded in each category.
“I loved the format of the competition,” said Jamie Melton, the 2012 overall winner of Stake Your Claim. “It was a great experience and I will absolutely be competing again this year to defend my title.”
To up the ante with this exciting event, Alaskan Brewing Company will be celebrating the northern Nevada release of their new Alaskan Freeride American Pale Ale beer. The brewery’s launch party and celebration will take place during the event and continue at Winters Creek Lodge where awards, live music from Decoy, and official after party will take place.
Freeride APA is Alaskan’s first non-seasonal brew since 2009, but more importantly, it is the first full batch of beer to be made from “beer-power”. This innovative energy source uses “spent grain” left over from the brewing process as a fuel source. Alaskan is the first craft brewery in the world to implement this method which is expected to save brew house operations by 60-70 percent, as well as save nearly 1.5 million gallons of oil over the next 10 years.
Entry in Stake Your Claim costs $25. All Participants must have a lift ticket or season pass. Pre-register at www.skirose.com or sign up day of. Participants must be 21 or over. (All Abilities are invited to celebrate – but only competitors who can ski advanced and expert terrain should enter.)
