Fire and Ice: The Story of Tahoe’s Ancient Volcanoes Sept 27

Tahoe Culture Cave RockFrank DeCourten, Professor of Earth Sciences at Sierra College, will lead another fantastic day involving the study of Geology of the Sierra Nevada. Part of Squaw Valley Institute’s Adventure In Your Backyard Series, the program will begin with a lecture explaining the geology features of the Tahoe basin region followed by a field exploration at Northstar on Sunday, September 27.

The illustrated lecture will stress the origin of the unique rock units and prominent landforms in the northern Sierra such as Cave Rock on the east shore. It will also describe the eruptions that occurred in the Martis Valley over the past three million years. These eruptions ultimately impounded the waters of Lake Tahoe and built the volcanic edifice of Mt. Pluto and nearly peaks. At least some of this volcanic activity occurred at the same time that glaciers existed in the nearby canyons of the Sierra Nevada.

Will there be future eruptions in our area?

Find out Sunday, September 27.

Lecture begins at 10:00 a.m. in the meeting rooms directly across from Big Wave Burrito, on Copper Lane, within the Village at Northstar.  COST: $10 donation to the Squaw Valley Institute

Hike begins at 1:00 p.m. at the bottom of the Gondola – $15 donation to the Squaw Valley Institute. Hike includes Gondola ticket.

The hike is an opportunity to explore first-hand the products of the Ice Age eruptions at the north end of Lake Tahoe. Meet at 1:00 p.m. at the bottom of the Gondola. This hike will take place in the upper elevations at Northstar and will last around 3 hours. Please bring water, a hat, and sunscreen. Wear appropriate hiking/walking shoes.
