Back in the day, old timers say, enormous crowds would fill the benches along packed earth lanes to watch teams play the ancient game of bocce in North Shore.
The once popular game has far from faded at Lake Tahoe. It thrives in Tahoe City at Wolfdale’s restaurant. In August, the landmark Asian fusion eatery hosts a Thursday evening league that would make Caesar (supposedly one its originators) proud.
A game of Italian origin similar to bowling, open rule Bocce is played with wooden or plastic balls on a long, narrow court covered with fine gravel. Two players or teams of two to eight can contest the game.
Wolfdale’s lower garden plaza has a legal size Bocce court. A green and red Italian colored scoreboard, bar, special lighting and piped in music complement its courtyard.
“Coming from an Italian family as a kid I remember my dad playing it with friends,” says Wolfdale’s owner Douglas Dale, official director of the league. “It’s very social, low key, and kind of addicting. It’s fun before or after dinner.”
Wolfdale’s Bocce Ball League takes place every Thursday night. The league consists of 7 teams and lasts for 8 weeks with the 8th week being Playoffs. Each team plays for about an hour every week and will have one bi-week during the season. A team must have at least 4 players and pay an entry fee of $100.
Every team receives an appetizer platter each week. There is a Bocce Bar with wine, beer, limited cocktails, and a limited dinner menu.
The 1st place winner of the Playoffs will win a prize of a $100 Wolfdale’s gift certificate. The winning team may also play Truckee River Winery’s season winner in the 2nd Annual Interlake Bocce Ball Tournament (TBD).
“Playing Bocce at night under the stars is a blast. It’s also an enhancement to our dining experience more than anything,” says Dale. “Drinking wine while playing is part of its tradition. There’s even a drink called the “Bocce Cocktail.”
Celebrating its 34th season, Wolfdale’s Cuisine Unique is located at 640 North Lake Boulevard in Tahoe City, California. Mentioned as one of the Robb Reports’ 100 favorite restaurants, the lakeside eatery features fresh seafood, meats, game and exotic produce.
