Adventure Risk Challenge Benefit Poetry Reading Aug 2

Adventure Risk Challenge (ARC) will host their annual benefit poetry reading and reception at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 2nd at the Cedar House Sport Hotel located on Brockway Road in Truckee.

Ten outstanding youth participants of ARC’s 40-day literacy and outdoor immersion program will recite their works at this event which past attendees have described as being insightful, tender and joyous.

“ARC’s poetry reading is a celebration of youth. For many of the participants, it is their first public speaking experience. They will share meaningful stories about family, life, obstacles, achievements and the natural world,” explains ARC director Jen Gurecki. “This is an extraordinary opportunity for community members to hear what our youth has to say and support the important Adventure Risk Challenge program.”

ARC’s interactive approach is rooted in rigorous academic instruction combined with outdoor education. Historically, summer program participants surpass their peers academically: 92 percent pass the California High School Exit Exam (compared to a 72 percent pass rate for socio-economically disadvantaged youth and 81 percent overall) and 77 percent attend a two or four-year college or university. “The majority of our students are the first in their families to attend college,” adds Gurecki.

The reading and reception are free and open to the public. ARC has received a matching commitment for a $2,500 private donation if event attendees donate at least this amount at the event in support of ARC’s results-driven programs for youth. The Aug. 2 event is made possible by a generous grant from the Tahoe Mountain Resorts Foundation. E-mail Jennifer Gurecki at jgurecki@berkeley.edu or call (530) 416-5682 to RSVP.
