Lake Tahoe Music Festival Goes “Strictly Classical” with Orchestra Academy in July

The Lake Tahoe Music Festival has added two intimate “Strictly Classical” evenings with the Orchestra Academy, July 21 and July 28. Limited to just 225 attendees and hosted on the lawn at Granlibakken Conference Center and Lodge, the early evening concerts showcase the Academy students while infusing the festival with its classical roots.
New this summer, the festival organizers created the Orchestra Academy which provides world-class training and real-life professional experience to 36 young, aspiring musicians aged 18-22. The performers have been selected from over 50 applicants and 36 young aspiring musicians from all over the world are preparing for their 10-day intensive residency program. Orchestra Academy musicians from Tahoe City and as far as Madrid, Spain, were selected through a review process and auditions submitted via YouTube.

On July 21, the Orchestra Academy performs “Classics New and Old” with special guest Ariana Ghez, principal oboist for the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Academy instructor. Music selections include Mozart Symphony 35, Vaughn Williams Oboe Concerto and Prokofiev Classical Symphony.
The second night of “Strictly Classical” on July 28 features the Orchestra Academy with principal cellist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Jerry Grossman performing “Music in the Key of D.” The repertoire includes Haydn Cello Concerto in D, Bruch Canzone soloist and Vorisek Symphony in D.
Performances are from 6 – 7 p.m.
Limited tickets are available for $10 and can be purchased online. Donors at the $2,500 level or above receive FREE admission.
