Arts For the Schools presents Jazz Reach Feb 3 at the Cal Neva Resort

Continuing to bring world class dance performances to Truckee and Lake Tahoe that lets local children interact with the performers, Arts For the Schools will  present Jazz Reach, a Multi-Media Jazz Concert on Friday, February 3rd, 7:00 p.m. at the Cal Neva, Frank Sinatra Showroom.

The opening piece will be performed by 35 local jazz musicians from Incline Village, North Lake Tahoe and Truckee who have trained with these talented musicians to bring a remarkable history of jazz to life.

Riverside Studios will host art and mountain culture during the opening reception of the Lion Heart Art Show for the High Fives: CR Johnson Memorial Fund on February 3rd from 4pm to 8pm.  Meet the artists and pick up a new piece of art to raise funds for alternative modalities of healing for  individuals suffering from Traumatic Brain Injury so they can “love the life they live”.

Free Guided Snowshoe Treks on the TRT

The Tahoe Rim Trail Association is offering free guided snowshoe treks along sections of the famous trail that offers 165 miles of multiuse trail, winding peak to peak around Lake Tahoe. From hiking along the new, very sweet Van Sickle State Park trail to see ice falls and a new bird’s eye view of Tahoe to a full moon hike on Mount Rose, it’s no wonder everyone loves this trail.

These treks are taken at a leisurely pace and led by experienced trail guides.

Rahlves’ Banzai Tour starts Feb 4 at Alpine Meadows

This winter, big mountain freeride action meets ski and boarder-cross strategy in a mad-dash race for a $80,000 during the “Rahlves’ Banzai Tour”.

Daron Rahlves, four-time Olympian, World Champion and Truckee local, has refined this classic race that started at Sugar Bowl to include four resorts.  The first race takes place at Alpine Meadows, February 4 and 5, 2012. Don’t miss it.

North American Freeskiing World Tour at Kirkwood Feb 22-27

Don’t miss what has arguably become one of the biggest events of the year to take place at Kirkwood.  Entering its 15th season at Kirkwood, the North American Freeskiing World Tour brings some of the nation’s best big mountain skiers to take on the permanently closed terrain of The Cirque which is open only twice each year for this event and its counterpart The North Face Masters.

Early Lake Tahoe Maritime History with Jeff LaRoche March 28 at Explore Tahoe

“Q” is the nickname of this 1921 classic yacht on display at the Tallac Historic Site. Was she called the “Q” because her name was hard to pronounce, or because it was used by the US Navy in top-secret operations on Lake Tahoe during WWII?

Even if you snowshoe you can enter the Tahoe Rim Tour on April 7, 2012, a point to point 26 kilometer race from North Tahoe High School in Tahoe City to the Cross Country Center at Northstar at Tahoe. This is a fundraiser for the Far West Nordic Ski Education Association’s Junior Ski Programs.

Local Students Speak Out with “Poetry Out Loud”

For the third year running El Dorado County high school students are among thousands across the state interpreting, memorizing, and performing classical poetry for Poetry Out Loud, a competition run by the California Arts Council and launched by the Poetry Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. At stake are hundreds of dollars at the state competition level and thousands at the National Finals to be held May 13-15 in Washington, DC.

National Winter Trails Day at Van Sickle January 7

As part of National Winter Trails Day, the Tahoe Rim Trail Association will host free guided hikes on January 7th from 10am to 2pm through the newly opened Van Sickle State Park right behind Harrah’s Casino.

There will also be outdoor gear demonstrations, raffle prizes, and a Warming Party at Explore Tahoe after the hikes.  While the snowshoes won’t work, you can still lace up your hiking boots for some great treks with Heavenly views, and the water fall with ice sculptures that look like angel wings.

Olympic Heritage Biathlon Event at Sugar Pine Point State Park Jan 14

On January 14th, the state park will host two free events as part of the annual Olympic Heritage Celebration.
