Walk for Farm Animals September 25

Tahoe Culture Truckee walk for farm animals 2008 (2)On September 25th, Truckee Tahoe will host its Third Annual Walk for Farm Animals starting at 10am in Truckee.

This year’s national Walk spokesperson is celebrity trainer and television personality Bob Harper from NBC’s hit show “The Biggest Loser.”

This annual event takes place in more than 75 cities across the United States and Canada to promote compassion for factory farmed animals and raise vital funds to support the lifesaving rescue, education and advocacy work of Farm Sanctuary, the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization.

I’m sitting alongside a friend and fellow rumbling belly at a folding table in the gym of the old Rec Center on Jan. 24, a Sunday night. In front of me is a placemat decorated by a local elementary student, and a vase with tissue paper flowers in a rainbow of colors made by the Girl Scouts. I’m facing the main entrance, watching people cross the threshold.

Free Community Walking Challenge: 10k steps in May for Better Health

Step up to the challenge.

For the month of May, the Tahoe Center for Health and Sports Performance is challenging all of us to meet the goal of 10,000 steps a day. That’s the equivalent of walking roughly five miles and meeting the Surgeon General’s recommendation of 30 minutes or more of moderate-intensity physical activity on all, or most, days of the week.

Truckee Tahoe Family Agencies Receive Much-needed Grant Money

Local agencies that help families in Truckee-Tahoe received $138,416, thanks to the efforts of Call to Action, a three-hour, phone-a-thon campaign.

In a show of support for people with economic challenges in the Truckee Tahoe community, 271 volunteers called 10,000 households on March 15, 2009. As a result, 839 people made a contribution with the majority of the contributions less than $50.

During the months of November and December 2009, Hard Rock Cafe Lake Tahoe raised over $10,000 to help to feed children worldwide.
