Through her own life changing experiences, Susan has witnessed the profound and powerful benefits of simple nutrition for herself and her family. Now she wants to share it with you.

Susan Frailey RN BSN from South Lake Tahoe recently published her breakthrough approach to nutrition in her new book, More Alive Now: Simple Nutrition to Change Your Life.

Through her innovative nutritional tools that make sense, are easy to follow, and will last a lifetime, Susan has joined Andrew Weil and Michael Pollan as a pioneer in the art of nutrition committed to help us achieve optimal health through simple daily decisions. As a mother of an autistic child, a full time health practitioner, entrepreneur and business owner, if Susan can do it, anyone can.

As a life long advocate of health and nutrition, Susan got serious about it when her son Dylan was diagnosed with autism at age three. Deep inside she knew a cleaner diet would help Dylan, as well as herself, and she dedicated her life to find simple tools that she could easily integrate into both of their busy lives.

While on her journey, Susan realized that life changes change our lives, especially impacting our daily food choices. With that in mind, she set out to simplify our nutritional choices and developed a breakthrough approach that is resonating with everyone. More Alive Now: Simple Nutrition to Change Your Life focuses on nutrition and health as a living spiral, one we are on at all times, moving one way or the other. Life occurrences and daily nutrition choices dictate our position on this undulating mind/body/spirit continuum every day.

To guide us on our personal path to wellness, More Alive Now is designed to help us make choices that nourish our body and give us the necessary elements for cellular regeneration and, ultimately, health regeneration and movement up the living spiral of wellness.

Susan’s book includes the essential life-giving nutrients missing from the outdated FDA pyramid such as probiotic foods and beverages; oils, essentials fats and omegas, and minerals; and easy to follow steps for food combining to avoid gastrointestinal problems, and how to harness the pH power of foods to immediately improve our health and well-being.

In addition to a simplified discussion about nutritional choices that anyone can understand and implement, Susan has included useful charts that outline food combining, ph Balance foods and the More Alive Now food pyramid, as well as delicious recipes, meal planning tips, and resources for shopping.

Throughout the year, Susan gives demonstrations to make probiotic foods in Lake Tahoe and is also available for nutrition and body cleansing consultations. She will be holding book signings and lectures for More Alive Now in the upcoming year.

Celebrating their fifth year in business, Winterhill is much more than just olive oil.

Based on the philosophy that life is a gift and meant to be joyful, Winterhill sells only the finest certified extra virgin olive oils in bottles adorned with artwork from local developmentally challenged artists.

“It is important to us that we create not only a successful business, but that Winterhill be a socially responsible business,” Schoonover said. “We are part of a growing network of entrepreneurs who believe it’s essential to give back to the community that helps sustain us.”

Located at 321 Main Street in historic downtown Placerville, California, the store’s theme is Products With Passion. All of the stores oils are available in bulk as well as in their signature art bottles. Customers can also bring in their own empty bottles or purchase them in various sizes at the store. This method is popular in Europe because it is cost effective for the customer and it is environmentally friendly.

Winterhill also features bottled and bulk oils, authentic balsamic vinegars, local honey, jams and jellies, gourmet chocolates, organics, and unique artisanal crafted items. The store is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

It’s called E.A.R.T.H GYM – Exuberant Animal Rhythmic Training Hall.

Taught by Jacquie Chandler of Incline Village and founder of the Tahoe Expo, you’ll reconnect with the power of how stretching with trees and strengthening with stone made you feel at home, in nature. Learning and building your personal Earthgym practice will expand your fitness program to play “with” the land until you play “as” the land. You will awaken a movement of primal, practical, play through stretching with sticks, toning with stones, and crafting your own footwear that allow you to follow your feet, feel your way, and make sense of how to….

She has the magic touch. Her gentle manner and extensive medical experience has made her one of the top holistic health providers in Lake Tahoe, who specializes in craniosacral therapy and acupuncture.

Meet Barbara Ricotta, RN, MA, L.Ac. of North Lake Tahoe.

Barbara discovered holistic wellness in the mid 1980s while working as a critical care nurse. Inspired by her many clients who were seeking a higher level of health and well-being, she subsequently embarked on a career in holistic health and wellness.

Barbara’s education includes a Master of Arts degree in Holistic Health Education, a Master of Acupuncture degree in Five Element Acupuncture with certification in Chinese Herbology, advanced practice in CranioSacral Therapy as well as a teaching certificate in Integrative Yoga. To name a few!

Barbara’s 20+ years of study and practice of subtle energy medicine allows her to draw from a vast repertoire of vibrational healing modalities to provide her clients with a unique healing experience crafted specifically to their needs. Her lifelong passion and gift for helping others is also inspired by her time spent enjoying the outdoors.

“Every touch from you opened me so much that when you worked on my head, I had a sense that you my allowed me to see the golden light which resides within me. Simply awe inspiring treatment. I felt touched in such an incredible way!” J.J.

Barbara offers Five Element Acupuncture and CranioSacral Therapy using Principles of Acupuncture which are described below.

Five Element Acupuncture

Classical Five Element Acupuncture is subtle energy medicine based on the five elements in nature (wood, fire, earth, metal and water) and emphasizes bringing harmony to the cycles of nature within the individual in order to restore and maintain optimal health and wellness. Classical Five Element Acupuncture works at the root of one’s Being. Each treatment is unique and specific to the individual. An ancient health practice for wellness and disease prevention, one need not have a specific physical, emotional or mental issue in order to seek treatment. (Acupuncture sessions offered in California.)

CranioSacral Therapy with Principles of Acupuncture

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle method for detecting and correcting the adverse effects of stress on the nervous system. A single session can restore well-being, enhance immune system response, transform symptoms of various illnesses, pain and distress while also releasing tissue memory from previous injuries. Using gentle, yet mindful touch, restrictions release from the craniosacral system and connective tissue resulting in a sense of freedom, well-being, and improved movement. Combining these principles with the subtle energy network of acupuncture (points and energy channels) offers the possibility for even greater levels of health as the body, mind and spirit release deeper stress and return to a state of harmony. (CranioSacral Therapy sessions offered in California and Nevada.)

Barbara works out of two studios conveniently located in North Lake Tahoe, and a studio in South Lake Tahoe available by appointment.

Inside Pilates Bodies Studio

Yoga Spa Tahoe
Incline Village, NV 89451 (above High Altitude Fitness)

To schedule a free consultation and to book a session, please call Barbara Ricotta at 775-750-7619. I highly recommend her too!

“Barbara is truly a gifted healer…she has a sixth sense for what is needed, especially when I do not know what I need. I put her in charge and when I leave I feel worlds better. I have never encountered anyone who helps me as much as she does. She is generous with her time, energy, and knowledge, bringing all to bear to reinvigorate my energy, calm my nerves, and sooth my Spirit. I can’t say enough about her…highest recommendation!” LT, another happy client

Health Talks, a FREE community health education series offered by Tahoe Forest Health System, will feature Jeffrey Dodd, MD who will educate his audience about a safer, less invasive approach to hip replacement, using the most advanced equipment. Specializing in Orthopedic Surgery, Dr. Dodd is one of very few orthopedic surgeons who have performed Anterior Hip Surgery, an advanced approach to total hip surgery.

This free informative talk is on Wednesday, September 14 at 6 p.m. at the Eskridge Conference Room, Tahoe Forest Hospital, 10121 Pine Ave., Truckee.

“The hip is one of the body’s largest weight-bearing joints. It’s no wonder that today more than 193,000 total hip replacements are performed each year in the United States. Our goal is to minimize invasive approaches that take more time to recover from,” said Dr. Dodd, MD, North Tahoe Orthopedics.

Dr. Dodd’s presentation will explain Anterior Hip Surgery, a minimally invasive and state-of-the art technique for hip replacement. He’ll answer commonly asked questions as to why it’s safer; how it’s less invasive and whether recovery time is less than traditional hip surgery. A question and answer session will follow the presentation.

Board certified in orthopedic surgery, Dr. Dodd completed his medical education at the University Of Cincinnati College Of Medicine. Anterior hip replacement is unavailable anywhere else in the region. Dr. Dodd is a physician at North Tahoe Orthopedics located in Truckee. To make an appointment, call 530.87-7461.
