Through her own life changing experiences, Susan has witnessed the profound and powerful benefits of simple nutrition for herself and her family. Now she wants to share it with you.

Susan Frailey RN BSN from South Lake Tahoe recently published her breakthrough approach to nutrition in her new book, More Alive Now: Simple Nutrition to Change Your Life.

Through her innovative nutritional tools that make sense, are easy to follow, and will last a lifetime, Susan has joined Andrew Weil and Michael Pollan as a pioneer in the art of nutrition committed to help us achieve optimal health through simple daily decisions. As a mother of an autistic child, a full time health practitioner, entrepreneur and business owner, if Susan can do it, anyone can.

As a life long advocate of health and nutrition, Susan got serious about it when her son Dylan was diagnosed with autism at age three. Deep inside she knew a cleaner diet would help Dylan, as well as herself, and she dedicated her life to find simple tools that she could easily integrate into both of their busy lives.

While on her journey, Susan realized that life changes change our lives, especially impacting our daily food choices. With that in mind, she set out to simplify our nutritional choices and developed a breakthrough approach that is resonating with everyone. More Alive Now: Simple Nutrition to Change Your Life focuses on nutrition and health as a living spiral, one we are on at all times, moving one way or the other. Life occurrences and daily nutrition choices dictate our position on this undulating mind/body/spirit continuum every day.

To guide us on our personal path to wellness, More Alive Now is designed to help us make choices that nourish our body and give us the necessary elements for cellular regeneration and, ultimately, health regeneration and movement up the living spiral of wellness.

Susan’s book includes the essential life-giving nutrients missing from the outdated FDA pyramid such as probiotic foods and beverages; oils, essentials fats and omegas, and minerals; and easy to follow steps for food combining to avoid gastrointestinal problems, and how to harness the pH power of foods to immediately improve our health and well-being.

In addition to a simplified discussion about nutritional choices that anyone can understand and implement, Susan has included useful charts that outline food combining, ph Balance foods and the More Alive Now food pyramid, as well as delicious recipes, meal planning tips, and resources for shopping.

Throughout the year, Susan gives demonstrations to make probiotic foods in Lake Tahoe and is also available for nutrition and body cleansing consultations. She will be holding book signings and lectures for More Alive Now in the upcoming year.

In the meantime, to learn more about Susan’s story and to purchase More Alive Now: Simple Nutrition to Change Your Life, please visit www.MoreAliveNow.com. You can also find her book at Grass Roots Natural Foods in South Lake Tahoe and on Amazon.

About Susan:

Susan Frailey, founder of More Alive Now and OSANA Publishing, has a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, and has been a practicing registered nurse since 1984. A self-help advocate and researcher since her early twenties in the conventional and complementary healing realms, Susan has accomplished in-depth reading and practice into the alternative health regimes of Bernard Jensen, Harvey Kellogg, and Paul Bragg, along with studies of massage therapy, shiatsu, and reflexology.

You’ll see three bear cubs on the “Bear TV”, five red-tailed hawks, seven barn owls, songbirds, raccoons, a coyote pup and a golden eagle.

Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, Inc. (LTWC) is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization. It is an independent, nonprofit volunteer organization whose function is to raise, rehabilitate and release orphaned and injured wild birds and animals. LTWC operates under permits issued by California Fish & Game and the United States Department of the Interior & Wildlife Service. No fee is charged for any bird or wild animal brought to the center, nor is any wild animal refused care.

From a handful of people in 1978 with an idea to help wildlife in their area, LTWC has grown to an organization that now provides a service to more than nine counties in California and Nevada surrounding the Lake Tahoe region.

To date, LTWC has received over 19,000 wild birds and animals and released, back to the wild, over 12,200, which makes for a release rate of more than 64%. The ‘best’ year for release rate was 2006, in which the organization had a 73.17% release rate. To learn more, please click here. Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care T-shirts and hats, posters, LTWC license plate holders and magnets and Li’l Smokey lapel pins are always available for purchase.

The LTWC is located at 1485 Cherry Hills Circle, off Elks Club Drive in Meyers, South Lake Tahoe. For more information about this South Lake Tahoe event, please call (530) 577-2273.

I am the nectar of knowledge, Homogeneous Existence, like the sky.

Here’s your chance to discover peace and freedom through Zazen Meditation with South Shore’s leading practitioner, Ray Goodenough.

Meditation is being held every Monday evening @ 6:00pm at The Center for Higher Learning in South Shore.

Donations only. No one will be turned away.

For more information, please call Ray at (530) 545-0809 or we’ll see you there.

Zazen (坐禅; Chinese: zuò chán pinyin or tso-chan Wade-Giles) is at the heart of Zen Buddhist practice. The aim of zazen is just sitting, “opening the hand of thought”. This is done either through koans, Rinzai’s primary method, or whole-hearted sitting (shikantaza), the Soto sect’s method. (Rinzai and Soto are the main extant Zen schools in Japan; they both originated in China as the Linji and Caodong schools, respectively.) Once the mind is able to be unhindered by its many layers, one will then be able to realize one’s true Buddha nature. In Zen Buddhism, zazen (literally “seated meditation”) is a meditative discipline practitioners perform to calm the body and the mind and experience insight into the nature of existence and thereby gain enlightenment (satori). (Wikipedia)

About Ray:

His spirit is all encompassing and calming to everyone who meets him. He’s bestowed many gifts upon Tahoe, but you’d never hear that from this unpretentious, gentle man.

An attentive, compassionate listener, Ray knows what makes us tick.

He should.

He’s been helping Tahoe locals find peace and uncover their true passion for over 30 years. And, he’s opened his private practice – The Center for Higher Learning in South Lake Tahoe – to help even more.

His story is a remarkable one. Meet Ray Goodenough.

In an attempt to “get away” Ray Goodenough took a weekend trip up Hwy 395 from L.A. in 1971. He spent a night in Reno and quite by mistake turned up Mt. Rose Hwy.

Ray had always loved the mountains so that drive was serene. When he made a turn in the road that exposed the panorama of Lake Tahoe from the top of the mountain he was totally amazed at the sight. “Here is the way”, he says. “I just couldn’t believe it—why in the world have I settled for living in the smog ridden San Fernando Valley—I’ve got to live here—I’ve got to live here.”

He said that out loud all the way driving down the east side of the lake to South Shore. Somehow he wound up in the majestic and spiritual place named Hope Valley where he camped overnight. Ray actually lived in Hope Valley for a summer before moving into town for good, and to this day that valley is Ray’s most spiritual place in the Sierras.

In 1972, the Sierra Council on Alcoholism, Tahoe’s first such program, had just been formed and Ray was hired as its Service Center Director. In those days the program had one paid employee, Ray, so the Center was manned by volunteers. A residential unit and an outpatient program were developed.

The first Drunk Driving Program was offered through the El Dorado County Superior Court. Working with recovering alcoholics became a profession. As a direct result of that endeavor and to improve his skills in counseling he began training in the field of human behavior.

On a personal level, Ray fell in love with Carol and family: 6 year old, Kathryn (KC) and 4 year old Philip (Scot) and moved them, along with two dogs and two cats, from Newport Beach to his mountain. Today, 33 years later, they have two different families with 6 grandchildren, three in Golina and three in Camino Heights.

After extensive training, Ray also opened The Center for Higher Learning, a private practice offering meditation groups, group therapy and hypnotherapy. Ray also allowed other personal growth groups the use of The Center.

Administrative changes caused Ray to leave the Sierra Council on Alcoholism, but working with alcoholics never ended. Excited about and unwilling to give up his training, and determined never to give up living in Tahoe, he worked at motel maintenance jobs and even drove a semi truck around the lake twice a week.

In an effort to help a friend and her teenage son, in 1978 Carol and Ray volunteered at a foster home. Carol tutored and Ray counseled 4 boys mostly about drugs and alcohol. At that same time a man, call him Bob, was finding what would be necessary to open a Small Family Group Home for problem teens. The two foster parents, Carol and Ray, along with Bob magically came together and gave birth to a group home. Beginning with the 4 boys and 5 staff, that program now has 4 homes, 26 residents, and 25 staff having served hundreds of young men over the years. As a cofounder, Ray held every position in the corporation over the years.

Ray’s activities in the Tahoe community are numerous in commitments, serving as a member of the California Human Services, El Dorado County Mental Health Advisory Board, and the Tahoe Care Coalition. By far the most loved and active commitment by Ray and his wife Carol is to O.P.E.N., Ordinary People meeting Extraordinary Needs. O.P.E.N. is a nonprofit organization that raises monies to aid anyone in the Tahoe Basin with extraordinary medical needs. O.P.E.N. assists individuals who cannot meet their medical needs such as co-pays for medications, provides transportation to specialty hospitals like UC Davis, Stanford, and the VA in Reno, and is an extensive referral resource for medial services. Ray and Carol have been active with O.P.E.N. for 14 years. Now Ray may have more time for his involvement in O.P.E.N.

After 28 years of being a social worker for troubled teens, Ray has retired. But not really.

Ray will be redirecting energy to his rewarding private practice at The Center for Higher Learning. The original attraction to training has led Ray to being certified as a Clinical Hypnotherapist, a Licensed Neurolinguistic Programmer, a Certified Trainer of the Enneagram as well as a Social Worker in the Foster Care and Group Home field. This experience has also allowed him to be an Adjunct Faculty for Lake Tahoe Community College.

Ray’s private practice includes Enneagram classes, Za Zen Meditation groups, Clinical Hypnotherapy, Neurolinguistic programming, and substance abuse counseling. The Center is also certified to issue Continuing Education units for several disciplines.

With a deep passion for serving others, Ray will also share his extensive knowledge and experience of 29 years of working with troubled teens as a consultant for group homes and group home staff trainer at the state level.

In anticipation of his next stage in his remarkable life, Ray announced, “I’m so looking forward to being more available for clients and friends at The Center. The community of Lake Tahoe has so much to offer and its diversity in lifestyle makes it an exciting place to live.”

Celebrating their fifth year in business, Winterhill is much more than just olive oil.

Based on the philosophy that life is a gift and meant to be joyful, Winterhill sells only the finest certified extra virgin olive oils in bottles adorned with artwork from local developmentally challenged artists.

“It is important to us that we create not only a successful business, but that Winterhill be a socially responsible business,” Schoonover said. “We are part of a growing network of entrepreneurs who believe it’s essential to give back to the community that helps sustain us.”

Located at 321 Main Street in historic downtown Placerville, California, the store’s theme is Products With Passion. All of the stores oils are available in bulk as well as in their signature art bottles. Customers can also bring in their own empty bottles or purchase them in various sizes at the store. This method is popular in Europe because it is cost effective for the customer and it is environmentally friendly.

Winterhill also features bottled and bulk oils, authentic balsamic vinegars, local honey, jams and jellies, gourmet chocolates, organics, and unique artisanal crafted items. The store is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

You can also visit them online at www.winterhillfarms.com where they can learn about hosting an olive oil tasting, as well as find Sicilian/Italian recipes, beauty recipes, scrapbooks, and interesting facts about olives.
