Sierra Nevada Collage Winter Workshops, January 4th-8th, 2010
Bill van Gilder | Hands on Functional Pottery
Pots that function usefully in our kitchens and on our tables have been at the center of a potters work throughout history. This intensive, technique-filled, winter week of making pots will share ideas about how to throw and hand build pots that ‘work’… and how to efficiently teach those techniques to others. Bill will demo and describe in detail, the project-steps he uses to teach students of all ages. Skill building for teachers, studio potters, and hobbyists alike is the priority. Lidded forms, drinking vessels and pots that pour. Baskets, hump-block platters and stretched oval trays will be the hand built projects demonstrated and practiced.
Brian Davis | Luminous Floral Paintings
Brian Davis will demonstrate the approach to painting in oils that has made his floral paintings renowned. He will talk about composition, the use of a value painting and the techniques of oil painting that contribute to the look of his works. As a student, you will watch Brian as he goes through the process of bringing a painting to life while you work on your painting. He will be there to answer questions and assist you with the creation of your masterpiece.
Brian Davis is honored to be in the collections of seven museums, including: The Huntington Library, the LA County Museum, and the New York Botanical Garden. He is published by Collectors Editions, in Canoga Park, Ca, and his art work hangs in 61 galleries worldwide, including the USA, Japan, England, Ireland, South Africa and soon to be Australia.
Adrian Wattenmaker | Extreme Filmmaking: The basics of shooting winter live action sports
This workshop will teach you how to shoot live action sports. Students will produce, direct, shoot, and edit their own videos. The class will cover film terminology and techniques from pre-production thru post-production. What is taught in the classroom will be put into motion as each person will be on the mountain filming skiers and snowboarders. The week will conclude with a screening of student’s work.
Adrian Wattenmaker has worked extensively in both film and theatre for over 15 years. Currently, he is director of the Sierra Tahoe Institute for film and theatre in Lake Tahoe, CA. Adrian is former director of the summer filmmaking and acting programs at the New York Film Academy and is co-founder of Free Space Theatre, a student run ensemble at Towson University where undergraduate and graduate students are able to learn from each other and visiting professionals.
Winter Art Workshops are $525 for the week-long non-credit class. Please contact Sheri Leigh O’Connor at sleigh@sierranevada.edu or 775.881.7588 for more info and to register.
