Sierra Nevada College, together with Clay Times magazine and Northstar-at-Tahoe, will host a national juried ceramics show beginning September 18th in the Village at Northstar continuing through October 16th, 2010.

The exhibit “A New Decade of Clay: 2010” will feature ceramic pieces from artists across the country to be juried by internationally renowned ceramist Richard Shaw. A kickoff celebration and opening will take place on September 18th, with events from 1pm-5pm to include ceramic demonstrations, a kids’ clay table, and “pottery Olympics.” A reception will be held afterwards, beginning at 6pm.

Submissions were accepted in two categories, open and student, and closed on July 23rd. Over two hundred entries were received, and a total of 40 were selected—34 in the open category and 6 in the student category. Most of the exhibited artwork will be available for sale, with Sierra Nevada College receiving 20% of the proceeds. Winners will receive cash awards and prizes, including a Clay Times cover story, Sierra Nevada College ceramics scholarships, and weekend lodging at Northstar-at-Tahoe.

“We were thrilled to have the prestigious ceramist Richard Shaw agree to jury this show,” said Sheri Leigh O’Connor, chair of SNC’s Fine Arts Department.

‘It was a lot harder than I thought it would be. There were so many excellent pieces to select from.’ – Richard Shaw, master of trompe-l’oeil sculpture

“In all, there were over 600 pieces submitted for jurying, and Shaw chose 38. The work that is in the exhibit is diverse and amazing. We’re very excited to co-host such an impressive collection of ceramic art with Clay Times magazine and Northstar at Tahoe,” stated O’Connor.

As Dr. Lynn Gillette, Provost and Executive Vice President of Sierra Nevada College, noted, “This is what we’ve been doing at Sierra Nevada College. An event of the caliber of ‘A New Decade of Clay: 2010’ represents just another example of our Fine Arts Department bringing world-renowned artists to campus to interact with our faculty and students.”

Richard Shaw is one of the most respected and collected artists in contemporary ceramics. Coming out of the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1960s, he has long been affiliated with the Funk movement. In the world of contemporary ceramics, Shaw is the master of trompe-l’oeil sculpture.
