ForeWord Reviews is pleased to announce the winners of the 2012 Book of the Year Awards, judged by a select group of librarians and booksellers from around the country. Representing more than 600 publishers, the winners were selected after months of deliberation from 1300 entries in 62 categories and exemplify the best work coming from today’s independent, university and small press communities.
Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards, as well as Editor’s Choice Prizes for Fiction and Nonfiction were announced at the American Library Association Annual Conference in Chicago on June 28, 2013. Lexa Hillyer’s “Acquainted with the Cold,” published by South Lake Tahoe’s Bona Fide Books, was honored with the Gold in Poetry.
Hillyer won Bona Fide Books’ 2011 Melissa Lanitis Gregory Poetry Prize and subsequent publication and was named one of the Best New Poets of 2012 by Matthew Dickman. She worked as an editor at both Harper Collins and Penguin, and is co-founder of boutique literary incubator Paper Lantern Lit.
“Hillyer’s poetic gifts and ambitions are fierce,” says National Book Award winner Laura Kasischke. “I feel I have been waiting a long time to read this wonderful collection.”
