An exhibition of original Meredith Niles Paintings is now on display at The West Shore Café & Inn, 5160 West Lake Blvd., Homewood, CA. The paintings may be viewed everyday 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Niles, known for her large still life acrylic works, has turned her attention outdoors, capturing views of Lake Tahoe now in oil.

“After living here for over a decade, I am still torn between beautiful sugar pines as subject matter and the incredible vistas that we are lucky enough to see everyday.”

Niles comments, “The West Shore Café & Inn is a dream location for my new larger work. Experiencing the beauty of the lake, new menu, the fun atmosphere of the patrons and staff, make viewing art perfect.”

From art gallery owner in Santa Barbara, to working for ArtNews Magazine in New York, Niles’ career has come full circle to full time Tahoe artist. Meredith has been featured twice in Tahoe Quarterly Magazine and was selected as one of the Tahoe Masters artists in their special 10th Anniversary Issue.

The paintings at The West Shore Café & Inn are for sale directly through the artist.

Meredith Niles can be reached at her Tahoe Donner Studio 530.587.8161 and through her website www.meredithniles.com

About Meredith Niles:

After completing her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Vermont , Meredith Niles worked as the director of Bradley Galleries in Montecito, California from 1978 to 1979. Meredith then opened the Meredith Niles Gallery next to the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, between 1980 and1985, featuring contemporary painting and sculpture by California artists. She moved to New York City and for the next three years worked for Art News Magazine.

Returning to California, she took a hiatus from the art world, spending a decade surrounded by nature, selling advertising for national park publications based in San Francisco. During that time she continued her own art pursuits taking figure drawing classes, painting, and attending monthly openings at the numerous galleries and museums in the Bay Area. In the fall of 2000, seeking her love of the outdoors, Meredith relocated to Tahoe to fulfill her life long dream of painting full time. Meredith’s current original work and commissions reflect her mountain environment.

Meredith Niles describes her work in series:

“My intention in the paintings is to create a sense of calm. I want the viewer to remove themselves from their hectic lives and momentarily contemplate the quiet tradition of the still life or the incredible beauty of our Tahoe landscapes. I first combined silver service pieces and pinecones eliciting thoughts of one combining city life with one’s weekends at play in the woods. I then became intrigued with the beauty of fruit and their reflections as the light comes through the window of my home. After living in Tahoe, of course the amazing lake and landscapes directed my attention outdoors. I find myself constantly looking at our paradise, almost framing a painting in my mind. But, no matter what series I am working on, I still love drawing portraits and the human figure. ”

When asked which artists influenced me the most…. it is a diverse list, there are so many that I admire. I feel Wayne Thiebaud will always be one of my favorites for color, John Register for moodiness and reflections, Maxfield Parish, David Ligare, and Vermeer for lighting and I stand in total awe of DaVinci, Eric Fischl, John Singer Sargent drawings of the figure.”
