During World War II, it was stripped for metal salvage and abandoned until 1964, when the pastor of a nearby church proposed that it be renovated into an art center, rather than torn down.
Linda Nazemian, Executive Director, will give a presentation about the historic St. Mary’s Art Center at the Tahoe Art League monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 12, 2010.
The St. Mary’s Art Center located in historic Virginia City, is located in the 1875 St. Mary Louise (Mackay) Hospital. The four story brick hospital was operated by the Sisters of Charity for the early miners. During World War II, it was stripped for metal salvage and abandoned until 1964, when the pastor of a nearby church proposed that it be renovated into an art center, rather than torn down.
Since then, St. Mary’s Art Center has offered both lodging and art instruction to and from some very well-known artists. Alterations and restorations began in the 1960s and continue today, keeping the center constantly evolving to accommodate its artists.
Linda Nazemian, Executive Director, will present the history and current happenings at St. Mary’s. Linda has been at the helm for the past six years, and has been responsible for many improvements. The facility is now open all year; offering a lot more than art experiences. Linda will also discuss Silverland, and emerging artist gallery and the opportunities for all artists to get involved.
